TEMUKA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

Year’s Work Reviewed Address By Mr Burnett In a stirring speech at the break-up of the Temuka District High School yesterday, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., appealed to pupils for good citizenship. He deplored the indifference of many people to things which commanded respect. The fact that some people were at a loss to know how’ to act in a becoming manner at a funeral or in church indicated a bad trend in public conduct. Nobody knew what was in store for New Zealand, but its future would be safeguarded if the citizens of to-morrow kept alive the early traditions of the Dominion. They should live for New Zealand, the great democracy of the Southern Seas, and they would accomplish this if they realised their obligations. “Respect your neighbour, respect his property; punch your way through life, and give to your country that patriotism which it so richly deserves.” Mr Burnett concluded by praising the work of the staff and pupils. The Mayor <Mr A. W. Buzan), before presenting the certificates for swimming and athletics complimented the school on its successful year’s work. He appealed to the pupils to learn to swim and so help New Zealand in its fight to decrease the number of drownings. He then presented Enid Mclnnes with the McLeod Memorial essay prize. The headmaster (Mr J. L. Menzies), thanked parents and friends for their attendance and stressed the need for

their co-operation for the success of the school. The chairman of he School Commitee (Mr A. E. Smith) expressed his appreciation of the presence of Mr Burnett and the Mayor, and thanked parents for their interest in the work of the school. Parents were then invited to inspect the pupils’ work w'hich was on show in the class rooms. Fine Display The display as a whole was in keeping with the high standard of former years and was favourably commented on by visitors. Side by side with the academic work were the handicrafts embracing coloured mats, baskets, linen bags and chairs. The walls were decorated with drawings and paintings some of which were realistic and colourful. The handwriting was particularly good. The general impression of the display was one of harmony and diversity, the exhibition covering a wide range of subjects. The more mature work of the High School pupils calls for a word of special praise. The wood-work in particular indicated excellent craftsmanship and originality. Important developments were depicted on drawings which adorned the walls. Chemistry was also in evidence and grafts and diagrams related important experiments. In the early afternoon a function was held at Watt Lowry. The headmaster (Mr G. Simpson) and his assistant (Miss Mason) were complimented by Mr Menzies on the high standard of the school work. The handwork was deserving of special mention. The pupils sang a number of carols in a pleasing manner, and the verse speaking indicated careful training. Mr and Mrs W. L. Harrison were in attendance, and the former presented the swimming certificates. Mr A. E. Smith and Major Chard were also present. Ken Taylor was awarded the dux of the school. Cross-Country An innovation in the nature of a cross-country race, introduced by the headmaster, attracted 40 pupils from the primary department when the event was held yesterday. The country chosen embraced the Domain and adjoining lands. Competition was keen and a thrilling finish was a fitting climax to a good race. The placings were: Senior:George Mahan 1, Ray Lyon 2, William Dippie 3. Junior: Keith Dippie 1. Fred Bingham 2, Vivian Johnston 3. FATAL ACCIDENT MARRIED MAN KILLED A. Clinch, aged 26 years, a married man with three children, residing at Allnatt Street, Temuka, was killed on the main highway, above the northern approach to the Rangitata Bridge, at 10.45 p.m. on Thursday, while acting as brakesman on a trailer drawn by a truck owned by the Public Works Department. The vehicle with trailer attached was travelling south carrying a 10 ton mechanical shovel, and had just negotiated the hill which is about quarter of a mile from the northern approach to the Rangitata Bridge, when the driver stopped to enable the brakesman to come into the cab. After waiting for a time he went in search of Clinch and found him dead with shocking injuries, 20 yards back on the road. It would appear from the injuries that he was run over by the trailer, but an examination of the wheels gave no evidence of this. An inquest was held in Ashburton yesterday. FLAG DAY It was stated by the Mayor 'Mr A. W. Buzan) yesterday, that a flag day would be held on Monday under the auspices of the Patriotic Society to provide comforts for soldiers. Volunteers were needed, and he would be pieased to receive offers of help. Considering the nature of the cause, he confidently expected a generous response to the appeal. FLANNEL DANCE A successful flannel dance organised by the Temuka Cricket Club was held in the Parish Hall on Thursday evening. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr R. Heron and Miss M. Millar, and a lucky spot by Mr Parrish and Miss Williams. WAITEA REBEKAH LODGE Sister J. Downes. N.G., presided over the quarterly summoned meeting of the Waitea Rebekah Lodge. One candidate was initiated, and it was reported that members who were on the sick list were now well. Christmas greetings were received from the Grand Lodge, Naomi (Christchurch), Daphne (Ashburton), Rebekah Lodges and from the Hakatare Lodge (Ashburton). Christmas parcels for the children were distributed at the meeting. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS As in former years, the Temuka j Borough Council and the Progress League have arranged decoration of the town by means of coloured lights extending the length of the main street. This work has been completed, and the lights will be turned on next Tuesday evening. EDWARDS WINS TITLE Playing in the final of the Temuka Men’s. Bowling Club A grade singles championship, T. Edwards retained his two lives and won his sixteenth championship, by beating W. F. Nichol by one point. PERSONAL Mr J. Shannon will leave to-day for Hamilton. Miss M. O’Neill left last evening for Hastings. “HONOLULU” With Eleanor Powell offering a series of new and brilliant dances against j the exotic background of Hawaii, w’ith , Robert Young in a rib-tickling as j well as romantic dual role, and with the • sensationally popular comedy team of I Burns and Allen adding to the uproar, . “Honolulu" M.G.M.’s new concoction of music, mirth and melody, opens today at the Elite Theatre as one of j the first of 1939’s big movie hits. The story deals with a screen star who wants a vacation to get away from fame. At an "opening night" he is told that the crowd has surrounded a man who resembles him, demanding his autograph. This inspires the star to arrange an exchange of personalities with his double and the deal is on. I The confusion is straightened out when j the double is persuaded to come back i to the Island.
