First race at Washdyke to-day at 12.30. Passaform is reported to be an unlikely starter In the Otago Handicap. Trains will leave Timaru for the racecourse to-day at 11.7, 11.33, 12.8, and 12.40. The win and place system will be used to-day at Washdyke and Te Awamutu. Baran has put together a string of minor placings without a win this season. He was on the easy list after the Cup meeting, but his run at Woodville should have sharpened him up for the Te Awamutu Cup to-day. In the Te Awamutu Cup to-day, Sly Fox will meet Golden Sheila on 91b. better terms than when he was run-ner-up to the mare at Te Rapa. Golden Sheila has 9.12 to carry, and both Balinavar and Sly Fox appear to have her measure. There had been no withdrawals last night from the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting, and as the course promises to be in fine order, few defections are likely. J. B. Pringle will drive P. Gallagher's horses in two races to-day. but arrangements still have to be made for the remaining events. G. Bulman. who has done well with Dark Flight and Gold Flight as private trainer for Mr D. M. Tweedie at Riverton, Intends to take up another occupation. The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator at Washdyke to-day:—Hole Memorial, Walter Gay and Battlefield; Levels Handicap. Paddy’s Harvest and Mohican; Kerrytown Handicap, Petite and Silk King, Rollalong and Trireme; Pareoa Handicap, Walter Gay, Token and Battlefield. Of recent years the winner of the Te Awamutu Cup has not been rehandicapped for the Auckland Cup, but there is no condition to prevent this being done, and this possibility is always in the minds of owners. Llangollen and Balinavar (last year's winner) appear to be most favoured in the north for to-day’s contest. Ten Railway Handicap horses are acceptors for the Flying Mile at Te Awamutu. Sulieman has the substantial impost of 9.13, and Orate only a pound less, and backers may look lower on the scale for the winner. An Interesting competitor will be Paddy the Rip, who did no good during a sojourn at Randwick. He is reputed to be at his peak again, and if that Is correct he should run well with 8.0. Balinavar has been a model of consistency this season, six starts yielding five seconds and a third. At his last appearance, in the St. Andrews Handicap at Ellerslie, he accounted for all but Birthday Boy, and as he has been hitting out freely on the tracks as Te Awamutu it is on the cards he may make amends in the Te Awamutu Cup, a race he won a year ago. He is to have the services of C. G. Goulsbro. Reading the Indicator The accompanying illustration depicts a section of the new totalisator which is to be used at the Trotting Club's meeting at Washdyke to-day. The shaded portions of the upright bands are coloured yellow, and it is this “ribbon” which shows the approximate progress and final dividends.

The large figures at top and bottom correspond with the horse’s numbers in the race-card; the smaller figures between the bands represent £ divisions. The place dividend is indicated at the top of the yellow ribbon, and the win dividend at the bottom.

Lucky Jack’s trial against time at Washdyke this afternoon is scheduled for 1.15, after the conclusion of the second race. The dual Trotting Cup winner, who will be piloted by his trainer, R. B. Berry, will have the assistance of a galloping pacemaker driven by R. Townley. The mile record for Washdyke is 2.5 3-5, made by Indianapolis; the fastest time in New Zealand on a grass track is 2.0 2-5. held by Van Derby. In the event of Lucky Jack breaking this time he will earn a purse of £lOO offered by the club.
