Jan. 4, s—Greymouth T.C. Jan. 13—Cambridge T.C. First race at Washdyke to-morrow at 12.30. • • • • C. G. Goulsbro will ride Balinavar in the Auckland Cup. • • • • Trains will leave Timaru for the racecourse to-morrow at 11.7, 11.33, 12.18 and 12.40. A northern report states that the Auckland Cup, not the Railway Handicap, will be Llangollen’s mission on Boxing Day. • • • • Beaupartlr is ohe of the present favourites for the Auckland Cup, but on many of his performances there must remain a doubt whether he is a true stay-r. • • • • When P. Atkins got caught up in the barrier when riding Yogi on the first day at Woodville he injured an eye, and he thought it advisable not to ride on the second day.

Haughty Winner is to go north to compute at the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings. He will be about the only South Islander at these fixtures this season.

Dictate has started 72 times In all to date for 11 wins, 13 seconds, and 13 thirds. In stakes he has earned £3785. His consistency deserves a win in the Auckland Cup, in which he finished third last year.

The Cambridge-owned Reception continues to please track-watchers at Addington, and she bears a greatlyimproved appearance. She will be in demand when she parades at the Timaru meeting.

Baran had not done any fast work since Riccarton when he raced at Woodville, so under the circumstances he ran an excellent race, and will be improved for his Auckland engagements. In the meantime he is in at Waipa, and should be prominent.

Thus far this season there has been no “find" among the two-year-olds. Fllles maintained their lead and supplied the winner each day at Woodville, and Ringling added her name to the list of those who have had dual successes.

Flood Tide is working in approved style and is one of the favourites for the Auckland Cup. With three races into the Tidal gelding of late and a further outing in the Te Awamutu Cup, he should be at his peak on Boxing Day, and his connection are hopeful of success.

Judged by her Woodville efforts, Lady Furst has not come up so well after her respite as she was earlier in the spring. The distance of the New Zealand Cup, in which she was one of the leaders till the last halfmile, might have taken its toll on her.

Tire Greenmeadows trainer H. S. Greene continues to win everywhere with his jumpers. Both of the Woodville hurdles winners Hethers and Anini, hail from his stable, while the latter also scored for him at Feilding. Greene has now won nine races since the season started, all being with jumpers, although three of the wins were actually scored on the flat.

Catalogue returned to Awapuni in wonderfully good order, and A. McDonald stated that it seemed a pity to bring him back to New Zealand just yet. Plans for Catalogue’s future racing are indefinite. It is doubtful whether he will take his place in the Auckland Cup field, and it is probable that he will not sport silk again until the Wellington Centennial meeting. • • • • A suggestion that it might be wise for the club to have a medical certificate from drivers competing In trotting events was made by the Christchurch Cor. er (Mr E. C. Levvey) at an inquest into the death of Eugene Clement McDermott, who died during the New Zealand Trotting Cup race at Addington on November 7. The Coroner, in accordance with medical evidence given. by Dr. A. B. Pearson, patli'logist at the Christch.’”ch Putlic Hospital, returned r verdict that death was due to heart failure. Dr. Pear:on said the failure was due to m jcarditis, induced by -degeneration of the coronary arte -S.

Lucky Jack is just one more of the large number of star pacers with thoroughbred blood in their veins. Harold Logan, Rol i'Or, War Buoy, De Soto and a score of others—and now Lucky Jack. Jessie B, grand-dam of the dual Cup winner, was by the thoroughbred horse Smith O'Brien, who was located in Ashburton County. Mr W. T. Lowe purchased her for about £5O, and among the foals she produced at his farm were Childwood, who won a Trotting Cup but was placed second owing to alleged interference with Reta Peter, and Tirane, dam of Lucky Jack. Tirane met with an accident and was never able to race, but she has been a prolific brood mare. Now 27 years old, Tirane was 20 when Lucky Jack was foaled, and it is noteworthy that Jessie B was a very old mare when she produced Tirane. It is a coincidence that Mr Lowe owns the great trotter Trampfast, who was retired at the age of 15 solely because there were no suitable classes for an unhoppled horse on his tight mark.

Token has been paid up for In the inter-Domlnlon events at Perth, and there is a possibility that F. P. Brosnan will take him across. The Kerrytown pacer is a slick beginner, and this is an asset on a half-mile track. New Zealand owners are guaranteed £l5O for one horse and £lOO for each additional horse, these sums to be deducted in the event of a horse winning that amount.

W. J. Broughton’s instructions on Russian Ballet In the Gothard Handicap at Woodville were to have her in behind, but she pulled so hard that ' e could not restrain her, and sir. was the pacemaker for about seven furlongs and then collapsed. Russian Ballet is bred to stay, being by Nightmarch from the Oaks winner Praise, but unless she overcomes the habit of pulling it does not look as if sh« will run on.

The controlling authority of harness racing in New Zealand is styled the Trotting Association, but more than 80 per cent of the races held under its jurisdiction are for pacers. The standard of pacing in New Zealand is high, but, measured by American standards, our trotters are mediocre at best. The pacer was unknown in the early days of the sport in New Zealand, and hie popularity appears to be due to the fact that he is more reliable. The records suggest that the old-time races were poor spectacles. "Won by a distance" often appears four or five times in the report of a day’s racing. A "distance" was 240 yards, and no money was paid to any place-getters which were outside the distance post when the winner passed the judge. The penalty for breaking varied. On some courses it v’as “pull and go,” that is, the horse had to be pulled up to a walk before it was asked to trot again. At other places it was neces- ■ -.ry for a reinsman to turn his horse completely round before resuming the contest. Most races were "optional” saddle or harness. Vehicles were heavily shod, and were cumbersome compared with the pneumatic-tyred spiders in use to-day. Gear was primitive, few of the modem aids to speed and steadiness having been invented, and in many instances the control of trotting was just as crude, though there is reason to suspect that the laxity was not always unpremeditated. In no sport in the Dominion has there been such revolutionary progress as in harness racing, which now attracts people who once shuddered at the mention of the game.
