CRICKET GROUND CHARGES

Request For Payment Discussion By Management Committee The fortnightly meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Cricket Association was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs A. E. Lawrence (chairman), V. Hahn, J. F. Greenall, J. Lang. W. L. Macdonald, A. G. Foster and H. H. Fisher. Messrs W. G. Tweedy and A. L. Hudson wrote accepting appointment as the vice-presidents of the Association. The Geraldine Club wrote asking for a ruling on the providing of stumps by visiting teams. The secretary reported that he had already advised the Geraldine Club that th Association had made a by-law by which each team had to provide three stumps and bails, and the club’s interpretation was correct that it applied to all matches. Mr Hahn, while agreeing with the ruling, said that town teams had made it an unwritten law when playing country teams to provide all the stumps and bails. Mr Angland, replying to Mr Hahn, said the procedure adopted by the town clubs could be continued, but as Mr Macdonald, the official umpire for the Geraldine ground, hacf asked for a ruling, all teams playing at Geraldine must comply with the by-law. Mr H. E. Lawrence wrote accepting appointment as resident delegate to the New Zealand Cricket Council. Representative Matches The Waimate Association wrote agreeing to play a South Canterbury team. It was decided to suggest December 9, and that the match be played at Waimate. In moving that players selected for the South Canterbury team be not eligible to take part in competition matches on that date, Mr Hahn said that the match would be really a representative trial and in fairness to the Waimate players the best team should travel. Mr Fawcett seconded the motion, which was carried without discussion. The Canterbury Association wrote asking if the Association was desirous that the Canterbury and Minor Associations’ match be played. The committ<jg, while in favour of the match being played, was of the opinion that more satisfactory arrangements for.the match should be made than obtained last season. It was decided to advise the Canterbury Association accordingly.

Ground Charges Mr Jordan, accountant, Timaru Borough Council, wrote asking for payment from the Association of ground and pavilion rental for Ashbury, Anzac and the Gardens. The account enclosed covered the past and the present seasons, amounting to £lB. Mr Angland explained that the Association had objected last season to the Council levying such a charge, as in the opinion of the Association the grounds, being public' recreation grounds, could not be rented and, moreover, the Association, through its clubs, maintained the wickets and paid the Council for any maintenance or preparation work carried out. The Association provided wickets for the primary school matches. The speaker, referring to the pavilion charge, said that the pavilions at Ashbury and Anzac Parks were of practically no use to the clubs on those grounds, and at the Gardens the room allotted cricketers was used for the storage of material. The pavilions were erected by the various ratepayers’ associations and the occupancy, if any, by the cricketers did not entail the Council in any expense.

Mr Fawcett, speaking in reference to the wicket at the Gardens, said that all the work was carried out by club members. He made complimentary reference to the primary school teams for their careful use of the wickets.

Mr Foster said that at Ashbury Park the Association had paid half the cost of laying on the water to the wicket and for maintenance the Council was under no expense. Regarding the pavilion, it was of no use to the club. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs Hahn and Lang, that the Council be written to asking if it would meet a deputation from the Association* regarding the charges. Dress of Players Mr Lang asked if the Association had any jurisdiction regarding the attire of players taking part in competition matches. In a recent match very few of the players in one team had been attired in flannels, and when in the field the team from a spectator’s viewpoint, was a deplorable sight. Mr Hahn suggested that a by-law be enacted to compel teams to wear the recognised cricketing attire. Mr Angland said that it would be difficult to enforce such a by-law, and suggested that all teams be asked to meet the Association’s wishes in the matter. The committee agreed to such action being taken. Messrs H. H. Fisher, L. K. Murray*, and A. G. Foster were appointed to fill the vacancies on the second grade committee through members previously appointed now taking part in the first grade competition. TOWN v. COUNTRY By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN. November 22. A metropolitan cricket team met a team drawn from the Southland, South Otago, Maniototo and Vincent districts to-day. The weather was dull and calm with light rain for a period in the afternoon, which handicapped the country bowlers. The Metropolitan side batted first and compiled 349 for six wickets (declared). Hunt made 113, H.’ Cameron 110 not out, Monteath 51, Elmes 28 not out. Country was dismissed for 138 (Cutler 447, Scandrett 23, Groves four for 33).
