Success Asured :

The secretary of the Association, Mr P. W. Young, has received advice that the following players will be taking part in the South Island tournament, which is to be held at Maori Park in the New Year: C. Angas, A. D Brown (Davis Cup representative), R. G. Pattinson and C. F. Penfold (South Canterbury doubles champions), and Miss Thelma Poole (present New Zealand doubles champion with her sister). This will assure success for the tournament, as several prominent players from Otago and Southland will also compete. DRAW FOR SATURDAY Al Grade Highfield v. Wai-iti. St. John's v. Aorangl. B Grade Technical v. St. John’s, at Maori Park Highfield v Wai-iti. Baptist v. Aorangi.

ST. JOHN'S DEFEAT BAPTIST Some closely fought matches were contested in the C grade when St. John's played Baptist on Saturday. The standard of play was very satisfactory for so early in the season. In the first men’s singles, A. Rosevear demonstrated his ability by disposing of a formidable opponent in H. McAlister 9-4. The latter was continually harassed by well-placed shots on both wings, and the winner fully deserved his victory. J. Delury had a runaway victory 9-0 over L. Wright, whose persistency in using a futile spin stroke both fore and backhand led to his ultimate defeat. The match between G. Goddard and W. Pettigrew resolved itself into a marathon set and the score of 9-5 in favour of the former was no true indication of the game. Each gained many points through the errors of the other and had Goddard overcome his tendency to rush to the net position at every opportunity he would undoubtedly have won by a larger margin. G. Kinney had little difficulty in beating R. Smith 9-3, although the loser, in spite of his inexperience, made determined efforts in the latter stages of the game to avert defeat, but he could make but little impression on the early lead established by the winner. Miss A. Liddle, of Baptist, revealed an extensive range of attacking shots with which she succeeded in penetrating the defence of Miss A. Driscoll, and finally won 7-3. In a long game Miss B. Flynn showed her defensive ability in withstanding the hard-driving tactics of Miss D Barclay, who was just beaten on the post by the odd game. Miss M. Henry carried too many guns for Mrs Lewis, who, nevertheless, put up a stolid defence against the forehand attack of her opponent, and seemed unlucky to collect only three games.

The game between Miss T. Burton and Mrs Stowell was long and hardfought, both players being extended to the limit of their resouces before the

superior driving and placements of the Baptist fourth string proved the turning point in the game. The doubles and mixed doubles were productive of good tennis, the games in almost every instance being hard-fought. St. John’s, however, had the edge on their opponents and won five of the eight matches. DAVIS CUP TERMS The Davis Cup regulations conclude with the following paragraph under "Interpretation of Terms”: Note.—ln the above regulations the competition between one nation and another is regarded as a “tie”; singles and doubles are regarded as separate “contests”; and the best of five advantage sets is regarded as a “match.” The players in singles and doubles are regarded as separate “teams,” and the players in the combined contests as a “side.”
