STAFFS REDUCED
FACTORIES IN AUCKLAND Insufficient raw material from overseas as a result of import and finance control has already caused a shortening .of staffs in some Auckland factories. although it is generally considered that the situation is not likely to develop to any great extent until after Chrlsmas. In some instances factory operations have suffered because when war was declared their stocks, owing to importcontrol, were very low and they were therefore not in a position to withstand for any length of time any holdup of supplies through causes partly connected with the war. One factory which is protected against overseas competition in its manufactured product during the present licensing period has just dismissed about 20 employees through depletion of stocks of imported raw materials. Several factories have put off some female workers, but in the engineering trade shortage of raw materials is responsible for dismissals of male workers.
