STOCKS AND SHARES

YESTERDAY’S QUOTATIONS CHRISTCHURCH Mornin« Call

NORTH BROKEN HILL A steady improvement in metal recoveries and treatment costs of North Broken Hill, Ltd., has been shown since the end of the financial year in June, the chairman (Mr H. M. Ballieu) said at the annual meeting in Melbourn?. Average metal recoveries for the first three months of the current financial year were 95.2 per cent lead, 87.4 per cent silver, and 86.7 per cent zinc. Average treatment costs were 5/3 per ton. The directors expected a further improvement on these figures. The capacity of the new mill had pinved to be 15,000 tons per week or 750,000 tons a year, compared with the estimate of 600,000 tons a year. The first six months’ operations of the new mill had proved that the capital expenditure had been justified. Referring to the contract with Britain, the chairman said there was every indication at present that the company would be able to sell its full production if the Australian and New Zealand de uand was maintained and if the company was permitted to sell the balance overseas. All the silver produced by Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty,. Ltd., was at present readily marketable. AUSTRALIAN WOOL CHEQUE If Australia produces as much wool as in 1937-38, her cheque for the current clip will be about £55,000,000. In addition the Sd per lb allowed by the British Government for appraisement, transport to wharf, dumping and other charges means a further disbursement in Australia. Profits made on the sale of wool outside the United Kingdom will probably make another distribution. The Commonwealth’s cheque for wool will be the largest, but one. ever received. Winchcombs, Carson, Ltd., reports that in 1936-37, £66,000.000 was received. The benefit from the scheme is enhanced by the rapidity with which the wool is t’.ing appraised and the money for it distributed.
