WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

KIMBELL There was a large attendance of members and friends at the school when Kimbell Women’s Institute celebrated its eighth birthday. Mrs Waters presided, and in welcoming the visitors, expressed pleasure at seeing so many present. During the first part of the afternoon an enjoyable programme of concert items was staged by members. Community singing led by Mrs J. Keenan with Mrs Goulter at the piano provided the first item of interest followed by recitations given by Misses Ruth Fraser and Audrey Durant. Two sketches “Frigid Economy” and “Three Dozen Eggs” acted by members, caused much merriment. Those taking part were Mrs Fraser, Misses Ruth Fraser, May Smith and Audrey Durant. Life in a soldiers’ settlement, with its many sidelights, interesting and amusing, was the subject of an excellent talk given by Mrs Goulter. Great pleasure was given to the members by Mrs C. Reed’s singing of “Killarney.” Afternoon tea was dispensed, after which place of honour was given to the birthday cake, iced by Miss A. Durant. Mrs Munro was called upon to light the candles, during which procedure birthday greetings and good wishes were received from Mrs A. Mackenzie on behalf of the South Canterbury Federation and Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute, Mrs Oakley (Fairlie), Mrs Green (Burke’s Pass) and Mrs Goulter (Women’s Division). Margaret Shaw, the first Women's Institute baby blew the candles out, while the honour of cutting the cake was conferred upon Mrs A. Mackenzie, president of Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute.

Mrs Waters then presented the aggregate prizes as follows: Premier bloom, Miss May Smith 1, Mrs Munro 2; most points, Miss May Smith 1, Mrs D. Ross 2. Competitions for the afternoon resulted as follows:—Bloom, Miss May Smith 1, Miss May Smith and Mrs Munro equal 2; cane trays, Miss May Smieth 1, Miss Ruth Fraser 2.
