WAIMATE EMERGENCY CONTROL

Registering Men For Patrols Plans For Evacuation Of The Town The registration of a body of men which could be drawn on at short notice for supplying patrols in the event of an emergency was considered advisable at a meeting of the Law and Order Committee of the Waimate Defence and Emergency Association held on Monday night. As a nucleus for the patrol it was decided to ask the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to circularise its members with the object of obtaining at least 50 names. It was proposed to add the names of other citizens who would be able and willing to co-operate, particularly those who would not ue liable to be called up for service. In order to provide for the possibility of local evacuation, the Accommodation Committee decided that the country area lying between the Makikihi an J Waitaki rivers and as far back as the Waihaorunga district should be canvassed by means of a questionnaire to ascertain what accommodation could be provided by the residents in the area. It was agreed that information regarding the provision of accommodation in the. Borough should also be sought by a questionnaire. The following sub-committee was appointed to make investigations and to report to a subsequent meeting: buildings suitable for accommodation); Messrs George and Eathorne (public Messrs Joyce and Calder (what tents, beds and bedding could be procured); Messrs Newall and Kaan (facilities and supplies required for cooking). It was agreed that the Finance Committee should be advised that immediate financial requirements would not exceed £5.
