Competition Won By Druids I Cribbage and Euchre Aggregates “Our Friendly Fridays” cards competition was concluded on Thursday J evening. Druids held a small lead for the last five weeks and wpn the competition by eight points from Oddfellows. The cribbage aggregate was won by E. Larson, while the euchre aggregate was won by G. Smith. Following were the aggregate scores:—Druids 638, Oddfellows 630. Citizens 611, Hibernians 581. Results were:— Hibernians 41 drew with Druids. The scores with Hibernian names first are:—Euchre: J. Davis and J. Preddy 12, H. Cain and F. Joynt 5. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE AROWHENUA BRANCH Efforts are to be made to establish a Maori branch of the Red Cross Society at the Arowhenua Pa. At the monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Maori Women’s Institute, the subject was raised in the correspondence received from the Society and personal appeals by Mrs J. M. H. Tripp, Commandant of the Geraldine centre of the Society, and Mrs J. L. Stone-Wigg, Winchester. Mrs Tripp said that if a branch were formed it would be the first Maori branch in New Zealand. The secretary, Mrs H. A. Boulton, was instructed to make the necessary inquiries regarding the formation of a branch. Mesdames J. O’Connor and B Solomon were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the South Canterbury” Federation at Fairlie. The Brunner Institute, the secretary of which Miss H. M. Longson was a former resident of Temuka, wrote that its September meeting would take the form of a Maori afternoon, and asked for the loan of specimens of Maori arts and crafts. The request was granted. In a travel talk Mrs Tripp gave many interesting and entertaining incidents of her trip abroad, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follows: Specimen bloom, Mrs C. Arnst 1, Miss E. Greave 2, Miss A. Hopkinson 3; sugar bag article, Mrs J. Beeby 1, Mrs C. Arnst 2, Mrs Paynter 3; shortbread, Mrs J. Clinch 1, Mrs R. Woodley 2, Mrs W. Rennie 3. Hostesses for the meeting were Mesdames F. Downes, Paynter, C. Arnst and J. Beeby. MAORI LADIES’ GUILD The Holy Trinity Maori Ladies’ Guild held its annual meeting at the Temuka Vicarage, the Rev. L. A. Barnes presiding. The annual report reviewed an excellent year’s work and the balance-sheet showed a credit of £lO/4/8. Officers elected were:—Presidents, Miss E. Greaves and Mrs R. Manning; secretary, Mrs H. A. Boulton; treasurer, Miss A. Hopkinson. The Guild decided to open a stall at the annual gipsy fair of the St. Peter’s Parish hi September. Simultaneously with the annual meeting the Guild celebrated its tenth birthday. The birthday cake was surmounted by 10 candles which were lighted by Paul and Mercy Barnes. The cake was cut by Mrs Barnes. Thanks were extended to the vicar and his wife for having the meeting in their home. AGRICULTURAL CLUE The Schools' Agricultural Club has made the following awards to pupils of the Arowhenua Native School:— Calf rearing: Stewart Manning, first class certificate. Potatoes: Christine Russell, first class; Carlyle Waaka, second class; Henry Momo, third class. Flowers: Christine Russell, second class; Hana Wixon and Naomi Wixon, third class. Lambs: Cora Berry, second class. Poultry: Herbert Russell, second class. Clover: Jack Benson, third class. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION A very enjoyable social afternoon organised by the Women’s Bowling Club, was held in the pavilion, when euchre and Lexicon were played. Euchre winners were Mrs T. King and Miss T. Goodman. Mrs W. L. Harrison won the Lexicon prize. Mystery prizes were won by Miss M. Hancox and Mrs B. Boyle. Competitions were won by Mesdames W. Galbraith, S. Clinch, C. Parrant and Miss H. Thomson. The hostesses were Mesdames F. M. Martin, H. H. Cain, J. J. Cotter, J. Shell, D. C. Clark, H. Wilson, T. N. Scott. BOBBY CALVES The monthly collection of bobby calves until Thursday totalled 76 as

compared with 111 for the corresponding period last year. The total to date is 344 as compared with 450 for the similar period in 1938. AROWHENUA EUCHRE PARTY The Arowhenua Huirapa Glee Club held a successful euchre party and dance in the Maori Hall. Winners of euchre prizes were Misses J. Reihana. and K. Taipana, and Messrs H. Boulton and T. Fowler. Mr B. Leonard was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr T. Fowler and Miss M. Wesley. CLANDEBOYE ‘ ANNUAL MEETING HELD After detailing the improvements which had been effected during the | year at the annual meeting of the Clandeboye Public Hall Committee on Thursday, the chairman (Mr E. Dobson) paid a tribute to the committee for the able manner in which it had discharged its duties, and specially mentioned the secretary and treasurer. The secretary was instructed to write to Miss B. Lee, who had been a prominent supporter of the table tennis activities conducted by the Hall Committee some years ago, congratulating her on her success in winning the South Island singles championship. As the hall is under-insured it was decided to make an attempt to affect a more substantial coverage. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr E. Dobson; secretary, Mrs Norton; treasurer, Miss E. M. Boocock; committee, Mesdames Radburnd and Dobson and Messrs T. E. Langrell and F. Mackie. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £39/2/2. The work accomplished during the year was outlined in the annual report which thanked all who had assisted in the management of the hall. Special reference was made to Mr Cliff and the Basketball Club for donations and to Messrs Donehue, G. Langrell and C. Prestidge for their services. “IT’S IN THE AIR” “It’s In the Air” is the first of the group of new season Formby subjects to be made on the higher financial budget, and this riotous story of what happens to George when he “accidentally” joins the Royal Air Force, is really indescribably funny. He continually falls foul of the sergeantmajor, and finally finds himself, alone, at the joy-stick of a nose-diving, tailspinning, looping-the-loop bomber, miles high in the heavens. Oh, no, George had never been in a ’plane before, but what’s that to George, he’s up there to make you laugh; you’ll have the greatest laugh of your life when you see “It’s In the Air.” Despite all his troubles in the “force," George finds time and place to sing three catchy, comical songs, that you will want to hear again and again. One of them is about “Our Sergeant Major,” and it’s really funny, too. Polly Ward, Garry Marsh and Frank Leighton head the big supporting cast.
