EASY RUGBY VICTORY

ST. KEVIN’S 37 v. HIGH SCHOOL 5 In the first school match played at Waimate this season St. Kevin’s (Oamaru) defeated the Waimate High School team by 37 points to five. The visiting team had heavier players and their forwards were able to break through the opposition with the result indicated by the score. St. Kevin's obtained their first three points from a penalty kick not long after the match started. They obtained the ball from line-outs and scrums with deadly consistency.

The local team at one stage gained ground with two free kicks, but at the half-way J. McKone, who was always dangerous, broke away and a try was saved by H. Deadmarsh. K. Holden secured the first score for the visiting side, and it was converted. McKone went, over the line shortly afterwards to add another three points. A successful penalty kick and then a score by J. Neylon piled up more points against Waimate. Neylon made a brilliant run from half-way, obtaining the ball from a back movement. After that the Waimate side became more aggressive and worked into the visiting team’s 25 and A. McCone twice caught the St. Kevin’s half in possession and put the backs out of action. In spite of a fine dribbling rush the Waimate forwards were baulked at the goal line and at half-time the score was St. Kevin’s 19. Waimate 0.

After half-time Waimate went on to the field full of vigour and a score seemed possible when E. Harris made a splendid rush into St. Kevin's 25. Two penalty kicks were awarded to the home team, but Brian failed to find the bar. The visiting side broke away again and J. Green crossed the goal line for another score, which was converted. A further five points were added by J. Neylon, who received from a passing rush. Once again one of ’.he St. Kevin’s backs broke away, but the movement was stopped by J. Dunstan. The visiting forwards were persistent and five more points were added as a result of a try by O’Kane. Waimate’s first try came after forward play took the game into the visiting team’s ?>. E. Harris broke away and crossed and Brian converted. St. Kevin’s backs kept the game open and one of t“ passing rushes enabled M. Hally to put on another three points. The Rev. R. J. Griffiths was referee.
