The meeting wa.convened by 'he Rev. Clyde Carr. M I’, through the Labour Representation Committee, and was attended by members of the Borough Council, the Levels County Council, the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Labour and the Labour Representation Committee. All present expressed the willingness of their organisations to do their utmost in an endeavour to induce industries to commence in Timaru. It was stated that the Harbour Board had already set up a special committee that had as its object the fostering of new industries in the town, and it was agreed that it would not be advisable to have a second committee working to the same purpose. The representatives of the Harbour Board said the Board would be pleased to have the co-operation of the organisations represented at the meeting, and it was therefore decided to call a meeting of the organisations represented and the committee of the Harbour Board with a view to appointing an executive to encourage new industries. It was also decided to write to the Hon. D. G. Sullivan in regard to the advantages Timaru possessed as a manufacturing centre, and that he should be requested to give his support to the establishment of industries in Timaru. The Department of Industries and Commerce will be requested to advise the secretary of the Timaru Harbour Board of any new industries that from time to time proposed to come to the Dominion. During the discussion, it was stated that it was felt that if the Minister of Industries and Commerce would supply the information the executive would be able to approach any prospective manufacturer to point out to him the advantages of the town from the points of view of both the employer and the employee. Timaru had an ideal situation in the centre of the South Island; it had a good port anti was on the main road and railway.
At the conclusion a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Carr for convening the meeting. Mr Carr presided and others present were: The Mayor. Mr W. G. Tweedy, Messrs H. J. Mathers. A. S. Kinsman. S. D. Mason (Borough Council), W. H. Hall (Borough Council and Harbour Board), R. S. Goodman (Harbour Board). G. B. Bird (Levels County Council), G. H. Andrews, Marshall (Chamber of Commerce), J. Drummond, F. Stewart (Federation of Labour) and D. Murchison (Labour Representation Committee).
