MACKENZIE COUNTY DISMISSALS

Sir- Your report of the recent Mackenzie County Council meeting contains the decision of the Council to dismiss three of its employees, and I, like many others, wish to pay a compliment to Mr C. J. Talbot for the stand he took against the dismissal of the men who may find tnemselves workless and breadless in r. id-winter. In rely to Mr Talbot’s question whether the men about to be dismissed were married or single, the chairman said that it was best that the Council should not know. The attitude of a new chairman in denying Mr Talbot, the Councillors and the ratepayers this information is greatly to be deplored. Apparently what is best known to the foreman and chairman it is best that Mr Talbot and other Councillors should not know, and general surprise is expressed that the rest of our Councillors took this snub in silence. Nobody will find fault with the Council for keeping down expenses and conducting the affairs of the Council economically, so long as it is done wisely. A Councillor voluntarily offers his services and promises to do his best in the interest of every ratepayer, and actually contests a bitter election on these principles.—l am, etc., SCEPTICAL. Fairlie, July 10. A portion of the above letter relating to a rumour has been deleted. Comment on rumours is not permissible. Editor "Timaru Herald."
