STATE HOUSES
RELIEVING SHORTAGE The acute shortage of houses in Temuka which has existed for some time, has been relieved to some extent by the completion of 12 Government houses. All but one are occupied. Twelve more are in the course of construction and will be finished in the near future. For a number of years there has been little activity in the building line in the borough, and with the increase in population houses were and are at a premium. The addition of 110 workers to the staff at the Public Works within recent times has made the task of house hunting an onerous one.
The State houses are well distributed throughout the borough and judging by the comments of the tenants leave nothing to be desired in the way of reasonable comfort. The houses from the outside appear neat and trim, and it is expected that when the remaining 12 are completed there will be competition for occupancy.
OBITUARY MR JAMES McMEEKIN The funeral of Mr James McMeekin, aged 60, an old and respected member of the community, was attended by a large number of persons at the Temuka Cemetery yesterday. A guard of honour of members of the R.S.A., headed by the president (Mr A. R. Beck) accompanied the coffin to the graveside, where the Rev. W. F. Nichol read the burial service. The pall bearers were Messrs A. W. Buzan, C. A. Patterson, J. Leckie, T. Butchers, F. F. Pellett, and C. I. Fraser. Deceased was a member of the 6th contingent which went to South Africa.
