Mr Douglas Edgar, who left Dunedin about eighteen months ago, has received his Bachelor of Education degree at Edinburgh University. Mr Edgar hopes to return to New Zealand about the end of the year. Mr A. G. Hollingworth, at present house steward at the Dunedin Public Hospital, has been appointed house manager at the Christchurch Public Hospital. Mr Hollingworth has had experience of hospital work in Dunedin for a number of years. The position lie will fill at the. Christchurch Public Hospital will embrace that of the former controller of stores. Mr C. M. Bruce, C. 8., 0.8. E., formerly AssistantSecretary to the Admiralty, London, who retired about three and a half years ago, arrived at Wellington by the Awatea to take part in the inquiry into conditions in the New Zealand Navy. He flew to Australia by Dutch airliner and caught the Awatea, being 12 days on the way. The senior purser in the sei-vice of the Union Steam Ship Company, Mr Frederick H. Ferguson, lately stationed in the Monowai, after 23 years at sea has been appointed to a shore position in the company's Wellington office. He has been a purser since 1916. The high-light of Mr Ferguson’s experience was the loss of the Tahiti, of winch lie was purser, in the Pacific Ocean in 1930. Dr. R. R. Mimmo, son of Mr R. D. Mimmo, of Dunedin, has been elected to the first Nuffield Fellowship established by Lord Nuffield’s generous gift to Birmingham University last year, according to advice received in Dunedin. Dr. Nimmo will work under the direction of Professor M. L. E. Oliphant, F.R.S., head of tlie department of physics at tlie university. Dr. Nimmo is an old boy of Otago Boys’ High School. He studied at Otago University and there gained the degree of M.Sc. Winning an 1851 Exhibition Science Scholarship, be proceeded to Cambridge and gained the degree of Ph D. Later he lectured in tlie physics department of Perth University, Western Australia, and has now gone to England under I.lie Nuffield Fellowship.
