Triumphant Return

King and Queen Home

Service Uniquely Rendered

British Official Wireless (Received June 23, 6.30 p.m.)

RUGBY, June 22. TO ITS END, their Majesties’ journey across the ocean * and to the other side of the American continent and back, has been a triumph.

The warmth of the acclaim accorded their Majesties to-day at Southampton, in the streets of London and at Buckingham Palace, bespoke not only the happiness of loyal subjects to have the Sovereigns home again, but the gratitude of the people for the service uniquely rendered by the Royal travellers in creating understanding and friendship in Canada and America.

Not content with the greeting rendered in thunderous cheers as their Majesties drove in a carriage with a Royal escort from Waterloo Station to the Palace along a route beflagged and packed with waving throngs, people formed a compact, shouting mass outside the Palace gates, calling for the King and Queen until their Majesties appeared on the balcony, accompanied by the Princesses. Then, for nearly ten minutes, wave after wave of cheers rose from the enthusiastic crowds.

For their Majesties it was a day, too, of family reunion. The Princesses had joined their parents on the Empress of Britain in the morning, and Queen Mary and other members of the Royal Family travelled to Southampton to greet their Majesties on their arrival there.
