BIOGRAPHIES IN BRIEF

W. W. JACOBS Few writers have given more honest delight to their readers than this chronicler of the lives of bargees and waterside men. He. was born in 1863 and after education in private schools he began to earn a living in the Savings Bank Department of the Civil Service. In 1899 he left this

employment for the more hazardous business of literature. The change was more than justified by the increasing popularity of his humorous stories. Jacobs has his grimmer moments as his ghost tales prove. In collaboration with playwrights he has dramatised some of his tales. Last year, when he celebrated his 75th birthday, a testimonial was sent to him from New Zealand admirers.
