INSTITUTE OF LEADERSHIP

PROBLEMS IN HUMAN RELATIONSHIP CONSIDERED BY COUNCIL OF WOMEN With the twofold purpose of training leaders in a democracy and bringing to the individual American citizen instruction on the vital issues of the day, the United States National Council of Women arranged an institute of leadership recently. The institute was, in fact, the twen-ty-fifth biennial convention of the organisation, but instead of reports the women listened to problems in human relationship presented by panel forum, questionnaire, tabloid, round table, dramatic skit, radio and films. Instead of speeches on the history and activities of the group the audience heard experts on such topics as preparation for living in a democracy, radio in a democracy, fine arts in a democracy, International affairs, consumer interests, what to read in a changing world, public health, and the economic status of women. The meeting was attended by not only American women, but club affiliates from 35 foreign member councils representing some 40,000,000 women. And, in addition to speakers from the United States, there were heard Erika Mann (Germany), Mila Vegrova (Czechoslovakia), Constantia de la Mora (Spain), Rose Quong (China), and Mme. Dreyfus-Barney (France). Mrs Ruth Haller Ottaway, presi dent of the council, said the institute “spotlighted the methods of public approach usable in a democracy. Its aim was to train many, rather than few, for leadership, and to make available to all both sides of the questions under consideration.”
