SOCIAL SECURITY
NONE WITHOUT FINANCIAL SECURITY
By Telegraph—Press Association DANNEVIRKE. June 22
At a sequel to the women’s meeting at Dannevirke last week, another was held to-day, attended by between 300 and 400, to consider the Social Security scheme. After addresses bj’ Mrs T. R. Barrer, of Masterton, and other local speakers, a resolution was carried protesting against the provisions of the Social Security Act, more especially the clauses relating to women. (1) Because it does away with the confidence engendered by the old friendly relations between doctors and patients. (2) It is a violation of women’s privacy and of the oath administered to doctors to respect that privacy. (3) It is a violation of the principles of democracy in that (a) it seeks to regiment members of one of the noblest professions who in the past have always given voluntary service to the poor; (b) it requires payment from those under 21 who have no vote and no chance of registering approval or disapproval; (c) they believe that an extension of the existing Friendly Society, National Provident or other insurance schemes could provide all the necessary benefits at far less personal and administrative cost and without the violation of any principles. (4) The present scheme is financially unsound, and there can be no social security without financial security.
