GOLF
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR There was a decided international flavour attached to the quarter-finals of the British amateur golf championship last month. A. Kyle, of Scotland, the eventual winner, beat the favourite. J. Bruen, Ireland, 1 up; W. E. Holt. United States, beat K. G. Thom, England, 3 and 2; C. Stowe, England, beat S. B. Roberts, England, 1 up; A. A. Duncan. Wales, beat R. D. Chapman, United States, 5 and 3. Thom is only 18 years of age and so his performance in reaching the semi-finals was exceptionally good. ONLY ONE AUSTRALIAN Last year members of the Australian golf team, M. Ryan, T. S. McKay, and H. Hattersley, played in the British amateur golf championship, but in last month's contest the only Australian was John Baillieu, of Royal Melbourne, who defeated D. Brown, 3 and 2, in the first round, and in the second overcame Elsworth Vines, the American professional tennis player. Baillieu began well, taking the first three holes, and turned 4 up. Vines played pluckily, but could not make up his leeway and was beaten, 2 and 1. In the fourth round Baillieu was defeated, 3 and 1. by M. White.
