FAIRLIE DEBATE AND PLAY READING
Successful Function ’ Held Good Attendance of Public So successful was the evening arranged by debating enthusiasts and the Fairlie Dramatic and Literary Society on Wednesday night that another such meeting is to be held in a month’s time. Recently debaters held a meeting and protested against the attitude of the Dramatic Society towards debating. They said that when the Society absorbed the old Debating Club it promised to provide debates for enthusiasts. This, it was stated, had not been done. These enthusiasts decided to stage a debate on their, own account and invited the Society to read a play. The result was Wednesday night’s meeting. There was an unusually large attendance, of the public and both the play and the debate were well received. The meeting proved that by fully catering for debates as well as for dramatic presentations, the Society would become a powerful cultural influence in Fairlie. The opinion was expressed that although members of the old debating club had not joined up with the Dramatic Society, as they had promised, they would readily do so if debates were staged. The decision to hold another debate and play reading has thus met with popular approval. Play Changed The play to be read originally was “Calling The Tune.” but because of casting difficulties this was changed to “Birds of Passage.” The cast was: Madge Simmons, played by Mrs S. Hatton: Mrs Noakes, played by Miss E. Jones; Harry Simmons, played by Mr J. E. Shears; Mr Frankland, played by Rev. D. M. Taylor; Bob Cook, played by Mr Shears; Dr Midget, played by Mr W. A. B. Morton, and the village constable, played by Mr M. Carlton. The debate was on the subject “That the present system of education is not in the best interests of the child.” The affirmative was taken by Rev. J. S. Strang (leader), and Messrs A. H. Carlton and T. Wilson, and the negative by Mr C. H. Miller (leader), Rev. Taylor, and Mr Morton. Mr P. E. Neilson was the chairman. After the debate the organisers were congratulated on their arrangements Votes of thanks were accorded the chairman for controlling the meeting and “The Timaru Herald” for publicity.
