TO RETIRE

SHAW. SAVILL MARINE SUPERINTENDENT After completing 49 years’ service with the Shaw. Savill and Albion Co.. Captain A. J. Charman, marine superintendent in the South Island, is to retire soon at his own request. Captain J. H. Gaskell, late commander of the Mataroa. will succeed him. Joining the service cf the company in 1890, as an apprentice in the barque Lochnagar of 646 tons. Captain Charman served as third officer, second officer, and chief officer in a number of the company’s steamships. During the South African War he was second officer, under the late Captain J. Maxwell, in the Tokomaru, and in 1908 he was chief officer of the Matatua. His first command was the steamer Waiwera, to which he was appointed in 1909. During the Great War, he was in command of the Raranga, which was torpedoed in the English Channel in June, 1918. Although badly damaged the Raranga was taken into Southampton Water and safely anchored For several years Captain Charman was in command of the Waimana. but in 1923 he left her to join the Tainui. After making a voyage and half in the Tainui, he was appointed to his present position early in 1924. succeeding the late Captain H. Clayden. Captain Charman has resided in Christchurch for the last 15 years. One of the Shaw. Savill senior commanders, Captain Gaskell has been in the service of the company for many years. He joined the company as a junior officer, and during the Great War he was engaged in active service with the Navy as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserve. When he returned ’ > the company at the end of 1919 Captain Gaskell made one or two voyages as chief officer, before being appointed to the command of the Karamea. After leaving the Karamea. ,ie was appointed to th'e Otira and the Maimoa, and in 1928 he wa* appointed master of the Zealandic, the first of the company’s quartet of motor-sh'p?. which came out in that year. Captav. Gaskell then commanded the Mataroa for several voyages, assuming command of the Waiwera in 1934 and remaining on that vessel for about four years. Last year he was at Belfast watching the construction of the Waimarama. and subsequently rejoined the Mataroa when Captain W. II Hartman left her to t:lkc command ■>'. Di- Dominion Monairh.
