LIGHT METAL INDUSTRY

Chamber of Commerce Interested Proposals for the establishment of a light metal industry in South Canterbury, which were recently outlined to the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce by Mr L. C. Walker (Christchurch) were considered oy the Chamber last night with a view to deciding in what manner the idea could be advanced. Members poiii.ed out that it was a colossal scheme and would require many years before it could possibly be established. It was decided to submit the proposals to (he committee the Timaru Labour Rcpesentation Committee intended to set up to foster Industry in South Canterbury. Mr C. B. Marshall suggested that as it was such a colossal scheme a subcommittee should be set up to report at a later date. "Something should be done as it promises to be a valuable industry,” said Mr M. H. Richards. Mr W. I. Tait suggested that as it was a subject that needed study, a study circle should be set up to consider it. Mr Walker did not seem to think the scheme could be brought into operation for at least 20 years. The aim at present should be to interest the public and the Government in the idea. A committee at Temuka was showing activity in regard to the proposal and the Department of Industries and Commerce was interested, said Mr M B. Richards. The idea had in the first place been drawn up by practical men and was advanced by Mr Walker. The Chamber should make contact with the Temuka committee. Mr G. H Andrews advocated rel fening the proposal to the Timaru j Labour Representation Committee I meeting for fostering local industry. The proposal was a tremendous one and constituted more than a national j Question as Western Australia, from which the raw material would come, would be interested. I It was decided to refer the matter jto the committee to be set up to i encourage industries in the district ( and also to forward to the Chamber ■ of Commerce in Perth, Western Australia, information on the scheme.
