SEADOWN DRAINAGE COMMITTEE
CRITICISM OF COUNCIL A meeting of the Seadown Drainage Scheme Committee was held on Monday, Mr R. M. Sievwright presiding. The secretary reported that he had been advised that the application for authority to raise a loan of £ll5O had been sent by the Levels County Council to the Local Bodies' Loan Board. It was decided to make representations urging the Board immediately to consider the application on account of the urgency of the work. A motion of sympathy in his illness was passed to be conveyed to Mr G. B. Bud (County clerk). Members criticised the action of the Levels County Council in making Timaru a gift of £l3OO on a revenue producing project. “I do not wish to discredit the proposed memorial in any way," said Mr J. Harris (secretary), "but I am amazed at a Council being so utterly ridiculous as to grant this money when it refused precisely the same amount to the Seadown Drainage Scheme, which is to be such a wonderful asset within the County. After enriching the Timaru Borough Council so nobly, like Oliver Twist it comes back and asks, nay demandr, more money from those whom they refused to assist. Why did not the council as usual, wait to see what Waimate was doing?" It was decided to record an emphatic protest against such use of ratepayers’ money particularly when it was found necessary to Increase the rates, and the money could be much more advantageously spent within the County. It was decided to request the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., to arrange for a deputation to meet the Minister of Public Works on the occasion of his \ visit to Rangltata on June 24.
