SIR PHILIP SASSOON United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 4, 10.30 p.m.) The death is announced of Sir Philip Sassoon. The Rt. Hon. Sir Philip Sassoon was born on December 4, 1888, and was educated at Eton and Oxford. Since 1912 he had represented the Hythe Division. He was private secretary to Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig from 1915 to 1918 and secretary to Mr Lloyd

George when he was Premier. From 1924 till 1929 he was Under-Secretary of State for Air, and from 1931 to 1937 he occupied a similar position. Sir Philip was keenly interested in art and was trustee of the National Gallery from 1921 to 1928. In 1924 he had his portrait painted by Sargent and was elected chairman ol’ the National Gallery loard in 1932. Since 1937 he has been First Commissioner of Works. Sir Philip became a Privy Councillor in 1929.
