GERALDINE MAY RAINFALL

Five Days Rain Frost Recordings Rain fell on five days during May. 64 points being recorded by Mr B. R. Macdonald at “Waitui,” compared with 24 points for the corresponding month last year. Although rainfall figures were increased on last May’s recordings the absence of heavy frosts was noticeable last month. Frost recordings supplied by Mr A. J. Blakiston, Raukapuka, for last month are as follow: May 1, 41 degrees. May 2, 41, May 3. 3, May 8,1, May 10. 51, May 14, 4, May 16, 1, May 18, 1, May 22. 1, May 23. 9. MOTOR CYCLE BURNT RIDER ESCAPES INJURY A motor cycle owned by Mr W, Angland of Geraldine, was destroyed by fire on Tursday evening. Mr Angland had arrived home and was riding through his gate when the machine caught fire and became ablaze. The fire is thought to have originated through a broken petrol pipe. No injury was suffered by the rider. CONES REMOVED BOY SCOUTS THE LGaJFS After collecting and bagging .ne bags of cones from a plantation near the Geraldine golf links, members of the Geraldine District Boy Scout troop received bitter disappointment when, on going to* collect their eftorts, hey found three bags had been removed. The Scouts have been collecting bags of cones and selling them to further the fund for a new Scout den at Geral • dine. The boys had gathered the cones and were returning with a dray when the theft was discovered. HORTICULTURE SOCIETY SPECIAL MEETING To decide on joining the New Zealand Royal Horticultural Society a special meeting of the Geraldine Horticultural Society was held on Thursday evening. Mr E. R. Guinness presided. After discussion on the matter. Mrs W. P. D. Barker and Mr E. R. Guinness were appointed delegates to attend the foithcoming meeting tc be held in Timaru. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr A. P. Barklie was carried in silence. CRIBBAGE DRAW The following is the draw for the fourth round of the Geraldine and District Cribbage Association competition to be played on Tuesday night:—Oddfellows V. South End, Raukapuka v. Bowlers, Orari Bridge v. Citizens. PERSONAL Superintendent C. r . Knight, of the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade, was a visitor to Timaru yesterday when lie attended the funeral o. the late Mr W. H. Walton. Mr Walton was the first captain of the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade formed over 50 years ago. “QUALITY STREET” Sir James M. Barrie’s play. "Quality Street,” which is a dramatic triumph for Katharine Hepbur. and Franchot Tone, will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night at 8 o’clock. Li a role peculiarly suited to her gifts, Miss Hepburn portrays a vivacious English girl of the early nineteenth century who suppresses a burning romantic spark for years while the man she loves is away warring against Napoleon. Franchot Tone has the role of a brilliant young doctor and soldier. NOTES A euchre and dance in aid of school fund, will be held in the Orari Coronation Hall on Thursday, June 8. The opening dance of the Orari Bridge Basketball Club will be held on Saturday, June 10. in the Orari Bridge Hall. Please note the change of date and hall of the Geraldine Football Club's benefit dance for H. Worner. It will '.e held on Saturday, July 1. in the Pleasant Valley Hall.
