FINAL MEETING

KARITANE HOSPITAL EXTENSION FUND COMMITTEE At the final meeting of the executive of the Karitane Hospital Extension Fund, the following report was presented:—“At a meeting of citizens called by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland) and held on September 20, 1937, a general committee was formed forthe purpose of raising £7,000 to finance urgent extensions to the Karitane Baby Hospital, Cashmere. An executive was formed, and the appeal was publicly launched on October 18, 1937, on the occasion of a function held at the Baby Hospital. Following the generosity of J. R. McKenzie and other donors of large amounts, over £2,000 was quickly in sight, and provided great incentive for futher efforts. “The total raised by the appeal is £6,830, and the expenses of printing, stationery and postages and advertising amounted to £l5O, leaving the fund at £6,680," stated the report. “The raising of this sum is extremely gratifying, and has been made possible only by the enthusiastic and unstinted efforts of many organisations and individuals, and the generous response of the public generally. Although it is not possible to express our thanks to all by name, special mention must be made of the following:—Rotary Club: The Club decided to make the Karitane appeal their major effort for that year, and individual Rotarians took up the task and contributed very largely to its successful conclusion. Country Branches: Country Branches and Sub-Branches of the Plunket Society performed heroic work in forwarding contributions amounting to £1,200. Particular thanks are due to the ditizens’ Committee formed in Timaru, who were successful in raising nearly £4OO. Special rhention must be made of the Malvern (£178). Ashburton (£132) and Rangiora (£134) branches, and our sincere thanks are due to all those in country districts for such wonderful support. Street appeal: The appeal realised £6OO, and Mr L. T. K. Allison very willingly and ably carried out the organisation, and collectors carried on valiantly on one of the hottest days of the summer.” The report expressed thanks to the newspapers in Christchurch and Timaru without whose generous support it could not have been possible to place the appeal so widely before the public. Many others, too numerous to mention individually, had rendered invaluable assistance, and, without their enthusiastic support, the raising of over £6,800 could not have been achieved. The executive was deeply indepted to Mr J. A. Henry who acted as secretary, and Mr A. V. Winchester who acted as treasurer. They gave ungrudgingly of their time, and their unfailing courtesy was very much appreciated by all who came in contact with them.
