HORTICULTURE

ROYAL N.Z. SOCIETY At the recent monthly executive meeting at Wellington of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. Mr J. G. MacKenzie, District Vicepresident, presided over the following members: —Mrs Knox Gilmour, Dr. H. H. Allan, Captain S. Holm, Messrs Wm. C. Hyde, W. S. Mason, E. Hutt, Herbert J. Poole and G. S. Nlcholl (Dominion Secretary). Mr J. A. McPherson, Director of the Botanic Gardens, Christchurch, advised that he was forwarding to Profes >r Carl Skottsberg, of Gothenburg, Sweden, a large dried “vegetable sheep” and seeds of rare New Zealand native plants, especially Canterbury alpines. Mr M. R. Spipworth acknowledged congratulations on his promotion to the position of Superintendent of Reserves, Dunedin, as from April 1 next, and advised his departure on June 30 on a six months’ tour of England and Europe, authorised by the Dunedin City Corporation. The Minister of Internal Affairs acknowledged the Institute’s representations on behalf of Mrs Knox Gilmer, regarding the approval of the Kowhai as New Zealand’s national flower. Concerning correspondence from Dr. Forman T. McLean, New York, to Mrs Knox Gilmer regarding his fragrant gladioli, etc., it was reported that circulars had been forwarded to the principal horticultural societies and repres mtative growers. ' The subscription to the J. A. Campbell Memorial Fund of £6 by individual members of the New Zealand Alpine and Rock Garden Society, was regarded as a very fine gesture. The Royal Horticultural Society’s new colour chart was viewed by members with great interest, and it was considered to be a unique and outstanding production. The appointment was made of the following representatives to the National Horticultural Week. 19-10, executive:— F. S. Pope (president), Dr. H. H. Allan, W. S. Mason and Herbert J. Poole, and a meeting is to be called for Wednesday. June 7. A committee was set up to report the further extension of the Institute’s scheme of horticultural examinations.
