JEWISH REFUGEES REFUSED LANTING TRAGIC SCENES ON GERMAN VESSEL United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph —Copy righ t (Received June 2, 10.30 p.m.) HAVANA, June 2. The German liner St. Louis, carrying 917 Jewish refugees, of whom 500 were women and 150 children, was ordered immediately to leave port by Presidential decree on pain of being escorted from territorial waters by a gunboat. Many of the passengers had visas to other countries which, however, they were unable to effectuate because they were not permitted to land. One man attempted to commit suicide by slashing his wrists. He was admitted to hospital in a critical condition. Many others threatened to commit suicide. Police boats surround the liner and guards are stationed among the passengers in an effort to frustrate attempts at suicide. Pleas to President Bru from several American Congressmen to permit the landing failed.
