RECORD ROUND

Miss J. Horwell Has Unofficial 68 Down to Handicap of Two Producing her best golf in a career which has been marked by sterling performances, Miss Jean Horwell, Tasman Cup player and runner-up in the 1933 New Zealand Women’s championship, created an unofficial course record for women at Highfield when she registered a 68 off the club—four under the scratch score. The previous best for women on the course was Mrs Hollis’s 69, which was done on the old course and which was an unofficial record. The official record of 70 is held by Miss Horwell. On a handicap of four at the start of this season. Miss Horwell has produced excellent golf and as a result reduced to three and recently brought it down to two.

Miss Horwell now shares with Miss J. Betts, of Nelson, the honour of being the lowest handicapped woman golfer in the Dominion. It is possible that Miss Horwell may earn another reduction if she maintains her present form.

When the unofficial record was compiled Miss Horwell was hitting long balls from the tees, while her putting for the most part was faultless. In spite of three fives at the start of the round, she settled down to excellent golf. She secured a regulation three at Bumpy and sank a long putt at Hillside for a three. Miss Horwell who

had another three at the Knob drove the Ridge green and was down in three. At the Chasm she three-putted for a five. She was on in two at Lindsay’s and collected a four. Miss Horwell played two of the b-'st shots she has ever hit in her golfing career at Seaview when she was just inches from the green with her second to be down in four. A two at the Dive was helpful while a long putt at Poplars after she was on in three gave her a good four. Port Arthur was taken in par figures while a long putt at the Terrace gave Miss Horwell a two. A five at Plantation, a four at Midway and a four at the Gap saw’ Miss Horwe'l continue on her brilliant way the performance being capped off with a four at Home. She was in the sand bunker with her second but placed her third next to the pin with a perfect shot. Her card read: Out—s 5 5 3 3 3 3 5 4—36 In— 42432544 4—32 The standard scratch score is 72.
