IN NEW ROLE

Governor-General Starts a Race HORSES ON BEST BEHAVIOUR By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, May 31. The role of starter for a trotting race was assumed by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, during his visit to the Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Alexandra Park to-day. This informal action on the part of his Excellency as he stood on the starter’s platform beside the track in front of the main grandstand met with the approbation of the large crowd who cheered as the field went away. Actually his Excellency’s responsibility for the start was not small. The field of 19 horses participating- in the race concerned, the Suburban Handicap, was the largest to contest any event during the day. Even the horses were on their best behaviour, lining up at the barrier in good style and as the tapes flew up at the release of the starting lever by Lord Galway, the field jumped away as one. While the race was in progress his Excellency remained on the platform and was joined by other members of the official party. They later returned to the ViceRegal balcony in the grandstand.
