Harrier Management Committee
One of the first annual meetings held by the administrative body in charge of cross-country running in this district was the annual meeting of the Timaru Harrier Management Committee, held this week. A spirit of keenness was abroad. The most pleasing feature was the readiness with which the senior active harriers were willing to shoulder the responsibility cf directing the activities of the sport in South Canterbury.
Harold Preston, who has beer, an active and prominent member of the Timaru Anglican Harrier Club, has been appointed to the position of president of the committee. The success of the Anglican Club can be attributed to the very good work of Harold Preston and his club mates and members of the other harrier clubs wish him every success in his office. The appointment of Len Rackley to the office of vice-president was also well deserved, and this popular runner and captain of the West End Club knows that he will have the backing of every cross-country runner in his work on the Committee. Len has also had the added responsibility of selection on his shoulders and the writer quite agrees with a remark he overheard that the new selector will do his work to the entire satisfaction of everybody. Heck Brown has accepted the responsibility of the secretary’s job, and he is a willing and keen worker and the sport will progress under his direction.
W. Tubb has been reappointed to the position of treasurer and should he be able to improve the present splendid balance, he will be able to accept all the congratulations that come his way.
Fred King has again been shouldered with the difficult work of handicapping. Evidently his work of last season has earned the well deserved confidence of the competitors.
The social activities will be under the direction of Herb. Dennison, and here again appreciation of work well done is shown by his reappointment to the position. Temuka Club Every cross-country runner and official extends through these columns a hearty welcome to the Temuka Club to harrier circles in South Canterbury, and wish them every success in this, their first season. The Management Committee has not been slow to give encouragement to the Temuka Club and has already arranged one of the major fixtures the Norrie Cup and the Maxwell Memorial Cup to be conducted at Temuka. In addition to this fixtur: another event earlier in the season will be conducted at Temuka. Rex Taylor, Abernethy, Spillane and Co., can look forward to an excellent season's sport for their last year’s efforts. Season’s Fixtures Official opening—Combined club run, Caroline Bay, Saturday, April 29; Saturday, May 20—Inter-club race, Temuka, senior, junior and novice; Saturday, June 10—Walmate-Timaru handicap road relay race; Saturday, July B—Norrie Cup and Maxwell Memorial Cup at Temuka; Saturday, July 29—Orr-Walker Cup, Sout.’. Canterbury senior cross-country championships, South Canterbury junior cross-country championships, Caroline Bay. Canterbury Championships During the last 12 years Timaru Harriers have been journeying to Christchurch to take part in the Cantermury championships. This year it is possible the Canterbury championships may be conducted in Timaru. As the Timaru Harrier Management Committee has made applications to the Canterbury Harrier Management Committee to conduct the championships here. This would be a step in the right direction and would give a great impetus to the sport in South Canterbury. Training Notes The Presbyterian Club have arranged to conduct a training night on Monday evenings at the St. Paul's School Room, Highfield. A full course ol gymnastics and physical exercises will be conducted during training operations under the direction of George McKirdy.
Club secretaries please note that information for this column must be sent to “Marathon,” care of "The
Timaru Herald" on Monday of each week. Will readers please note that these notes which usually appear in Saturday's supplement will now appear in Thursday’s issue.
