OBITUARY
MR J. P. McQUILKIN The death of Mr Joseph Patrick McQuilkin, of Eiffelton, a well-known farmer and racehorse owner, occurred in a private hospital in Ashburton on Monday. Born at Hokitika 69 years ago, Mr McQuilkin was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs John McQuilkin. His parents lived at Lyttelton for some time before going to Eiffelton. Mr McQuilkin attended the Flemington School and later went to St. Leo’s College in Christchurch. Afterwards he took up farming at Eiffelton. Mr McQuilkin took a keen interest in the affairs of his district and was chairman of the Eiffelton School Committee for 20 years, and chairman of the Longbeach Road Board for many years until it was amalgamated with the Ashburton County. He was a member of the Ashburton Racing and Trotting Clubs, Canterbury Park Trotting Club. Metropolitan Trotting Club, Christchurch Hunt Club, and South Canterbury Hunt Club, and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He was a member of the Ashburton Club and M.S.A. Mr McQuilkin had considerable success with trotters and gallopers. He owned Belfast Girl, which won the Ashburton Handicap, Edna and Malcol: i Dee (trotters), Deportment, which won the Great Western Steeplechase at Riverton two years in succession, and the Teschemaker Cup at Timaru; also Uncle Jim, which won the Waimate Hunt Cup and Teschemaker Cup. He was one of the oldest members of the Ashburton Catholic parish and was an ardent church man.
Mr McQuilkin is survived by his wife and eight children—Mr John McQuilkin (Hinds), Dr J. P. McQuilkin (Christchurch), Messrs James McQuilkin and G. McQuilkin (Eiffelton), Mesdames H. A. Ward (Christchurch), J. L. Connolly (Rakaia), Miss K. McQuilkin (Eiffelton), and Mrs E. Marks (England).
