Mr Charles Price, of Napier, has retired from active journalism, after 62 years of newspaper service in Hawke’s Bay.

The Rev. A. J. Seamer, who has resigned from the position of general superintendent of home and Maori missions under the Methodist Church of New Zealand, is to continue to act as adviser on Maori matters to his successor, the Rev. G. Laurenson.

Believed to be Hawke’s Bay’s oldest resident, MrGeorge W. Lines, of Hastings, celebrated his 102nd birthday yesterday. He was born at Salford, Bedfordshire, England, left with his parents for Australia in 1854. He arrived in Hawke’s Bay in 1870 and worked in a timber mill. The cottage built by Mr Lines when he came to Hastings was then the biggest in the town. It is still in use.
