Ajax won the C. M. Loyd Stakes at Flemington, as was expected, but only after a race as sensational as the Lloyd Stakes in which Waterline defeated Phar Lap eight years ago. Ajax was the only one of the field to get away. El Golea, swinging away from the barrier, was left more than 20 lengths. Judean dug his toes in and swung away, losing easily half a furlong. The champion merely cantered over the course to register his eighteenth successive win, but things might have been very different. Before the fiasco at the start he jumped through the barrier entangling his rider so securely that assistance had to be rendered before he was released. Fortunately Ajax did not attempt to get away. If Ajax, as expected, wins his next tw- races, he will pass Carbine’s score of £29,626, and take twelfth place on the list of Antipodean stake winners. Tire leading thirteen are:—
