HAWKE’S BAY PREPARED

National Championships

The Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Centre is leaving nothing undone to assure the success of the New Zealand track and field championships on March 10 and 11, and the meeting promises to be one of the best held in recent years. It is the first time in 40 years that Napier has been the venue of the national championships, and to mark the occasion each competitor will be presented with a suitable souvenir. The track at McLean Park, which is the venue of the meeting, is a standard 440 yards track, with full curves, and a 60 yards straight. The 220 yards championship will be run a full curve with a 60 yards straight. Napier will also be the venue of the first Dominion marathon championship which is to be held on March 11, and in which three Otago men—G. L. Austin, C. G. Gibbons and G. R. Colston —will be competing. The runners will cover one lap of McLean Park, and then proceed along the main highway to Hastings and back, finishing with one lap of the park. The main highway is constructed of concrete and bitumen, mostly the latter.
