JIM BARRON ILL
Stars of the ’Nineties Moving towards his 79th birthday, at Sydney, Jim Barron, one of the world’s greatest lightweights of all time, is experiencing a rocky path and with illhealth worrying him, a little aid would be welcome. Jim flourished at the time when Australia’s best from Peter Jackson and Paddy Slavin in the heavies down to featherweight Griffo and bantam Abe Willis made great names overseas. And more' than 45 years ago Barron held the brilliant Griffo to a 22-round draw. He went to America twice. On the first occasion among his victories was a k.o. in two rounds over Bobby Dobbs, coloured lightweight champion of the world. As Dobbs later stopped Dick Burge, England’s champion, Jom’s win was something for the Australian to crow about.
After more victories he came home, but returned with Griffo.
This time Jim had what was probably the greatest triumph of his career. “Kid” McCoy, one of the best middleweights America ever had, could manage only a draw with the ten-stoner from Parramatta. And Jim had McCoy down for nine with a right to the jaw in the second round. This blow injured his hand, otherwise the great “Kid” might not have lasted the ten rounds.
Barron fought spasmodically on his return, but good old Anno Domini was' taking toll. He refereed for years at the Gaiety, and taught the noble art at the King’s School. As Larry Foley passed on his Jem Mace tuition to Jim, no one in Australia was more qualified to impart the real stuff to lads. With Mick Dunn—still very active— Jack Fuller, ex-lightweight champion, and Tom Partridge (“Pheasant”) in business at Westmead, Jim represents practically all that is left in Sydney of the stars of the early nineties. The Professional Boxers, Managers and Trainers’ Association, who have a benevolent fund as one of their aims, might do something to soften Jim’s path now. Why not promote a benefit? Talent galore is in Sydney, and most would be glad to help one who made a name on both sides of the Pacific.
