A MAN’S SPORTS SWEATER

Materials: 14 ounces of navy blue wool, two knitting needles No. 9, two No. 13, and five stocking knitting needles No. 13.

The Knitting Pattern: Ribbing, two plain, two purl. Cable stitch: Ist row. two purl, six plain, continue to the end of the row. 2nd row and all even rows, knit the stitches as they appear. 3rd, sth. and 7th rows, knitted as the Ist row. Sth row, two purl, take three stitches on a reserve needle, knit the following three stitches plain, and then knit the three stitches plain from the reserve needle. 11th row, repeat the pattern.

151 in, and knit a rib of 3in. Continue with the cable stitch on the coarse needles. When the work measures lOlin begin the armholes. Cast oft six stitches at the beginning of the two following rows, begin the next two rows by casting off three stitches, and the following eight rows by casting off one stitch. Continue without decreasings until the work measures 20Sin. Begin the neck by putting the central 20 stitches on a thread and the stitches for one shoulder on a reserve needle. Continue knitting the other shoulder, casting off two stitches for the neck in every other row until there are only 4lin of stitches left. When the armhole measures Bin cast off the stitches in four lots. Knit the other shoulder in the same manner.

The Back: Cast on stitches to measure 14in, using the No. 13 needles, and knit a rib of 3in. Continue with the cable pattern on the coarse needles. When the work measures lOlin, begin the armholes. Cast off three stitches at each side, Then decrease twice by two stitches at each side, and lastly decrease twice by one stitch at each side. Continue without decreasing until the armhole measures 7Sin. Divide the sitches into three equal parts. The central sitches should be put on a reserve needle and the shoulders cast off as on the front.

The Sleeves: Cast on stitches to measure 9iin, using the No. 13 needles. Knit a ribbing of 21in, and then continue in cable stitch on the coarse needles. Increase by one stitch at each side in every eighth row until the work measures Ulin. When 17Jin have been knitted begin the decreasings. Begin the following two rows by casting off six stitches and afterwards cast off one stitch every row until there .are 20 stitches. Cast these off in one lot.

To Make Up: Press all the parts under a damp cloth, and sew the sweater together. Tale up the stitches at the front and back of the neck and pick up sufficient stitches between to knit a neat ribbing of Ilin on the stocking needle. Cast off loosely in ribbing.
