BIG FIRE IN AUCKLAND
DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £2OOO By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, February 24 Flames, which threw skywards great masses of smoke and burning embers, destroyed a large two-storey wooden building owned by Messrs Browne Bros, and Geddes, Ltd., confectionery manufacturers, at Newmarket, at daybreak to-day. Although a portion of the framework was saved, the building is regarded as a complete loss, and will have to be rebuilt.
The fire brigades did good work in preventing a spread of the flames to the company's main store and manufacturing premises. The block destroyed was Insured for £lOOO, and the contents for £lBOO, both policies with Lloyds. The company’s loss, over and above the insurances, is estimated at £2OOO. Nearby residents were for a time, concerned about the danger from falling embers, but this was of brief duration.
