TIMARU TROTTING CLUB

CARD FOR TO-DAY ATTACK ON MILE RECORD I The Timaru Trotting Clu’s summer fixture, which is to be held at Washdyke to-day, will, if conditions are favourable, be featured by an attack by Lucky Jack on Van Derby’s grass track record of 2.1 1-5, this being timed for 1 o’clock. The opening event on the card is due to start at 12.15, and Lucky Jack will make his effort after the conclusion of the second race. Well-balanced fields are engaged in all events, and as the course has never been in better order, fast and interesting racing should be provided. At 1 p.m., if conditions are favourable, Lucky Jack will make an attempt to break Van Derby’s mile grass track record of 2.1 1-5, as well as Indianapolis’s Washdyke record of 2.5 2-5. The following are expected to be prominent in their respective races:— Claremont Handicap— Patch’s Discovery, Co-director, Thor. Salisbury Handicap—Devotion-Battle-vale, Palomar, Cruiser. John Hole Memorial— Toorak-Colonel Grattan, Fine Art, Donald Dhu. Levels Handicap— Kilrea, Acuity, Dancing Pirate. Waimate Handicap— Patch’s Discovery, Mother’s Boy, Great Linnet. Kerrytown Handicap Battlevale-De-votion, Ace High, Tinker. Pareora Handicap— Fremont, ToorakIraq, Lightning Lady. Farewell Handicap— Kilrea, Acuity, Bed Rock. The card is as follows:

OFFER FOR MAN O’ WAR MILLION DOLLARS REFUSED

United Press Association—By Mlectrlc Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 13, 7.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 13. Mr Samuel Riddle, owner of Man o’ War, announced that he had refused an offer of 1,000,000 dollars for the racehorse from Mr Louis B. Mayer, cinema producer. The announcement caused a surprise since Man o’ War is aged 22, and his stud value has been reduced. Mr Mayer, who has recently undertaken thoroughbred racing, declined to comment.

At a meeting at Wanganella, near Hay, in the south-western part of New South Wales, only three horses competed in five races at the meeting, one race being abandoned because every entry was scratched. The three runners were Mundiwa, Carbungie and Lady Pinnacle. A fourth was present, but was ineligible because its registration had not been completed. Mundiwa had a walk-over in the Zara Handicap and Falkiner Handicap and won the Wanganell Cup, with Carbungie second and Lady Pinnacle third. Carbungie won the Caroonboon Handicap, with Lady Pinnacle second, and had a walkover in the Welter Handicap. The reason for the meeting was that backers and bookmakers could operate on races held on the same afternoon in Sydney ami Melbourne.
