GERALDINE BOWLERS’ VISIT

Queensland Tourists Short Stay Welcome Extended Tributes to New Zealand scenery were paid by members of the Queensland touring bowlers, who lunched at Geraldine yesterday en route to the Hermitage. The party were met by representatives of the Geraldine Bowling Club and the Town Clerk (Mr C. L. Kirby). During lunch opportunity was taken by the president of the Geraldine Bowling Club ' (Mr G. R. Knibb) to extend a welcome to the visitors. He was sorry their stay was not longer, and wished them a very pleasant tour. The Town Clerk (Mr C. L. Kirby), who apologised for the absence of the Deputy-Mayor (Mr A. J. Bell), cordially welcomed the party on behalf of the borough. They were always pleased, he said, to have visitors from overseas visit the township. “We are pleased to return to Geraldine and renew old acquaintances made from our previous visit," said Mr R. J. Morris, president of the Quensland Bowling Association. Those who had been on the last tour knew of the marvellous New Zealand scenery, out. those who had not had a great treat in store for them, he said. They wed remembered Timaru and were looking forward to their visit there. Mr F. C. Ker said they appreciated the cordial welcome extended and the opportunity to shake hands. Their stay was only a short one, but they all hoped to be able to visit Geraldine for a longer period on their way back OFFICERS FAREWELLED To farewell two popular officers of the Geraldine Corps of the Salvation Army, Captain Dixon and Lieutenant a social afternoon was held in the Army Hall. On behalf of the children, Mesdames H. Wilson and L. J. Whiting wished the officers happiness in their new spheres. Items were contributed by Mesdames T. Hutt, H Coombs and R. Tagg (recitations), and Mrs E. Keeble (kings). Captain Dixon is going to Rakaia, and Lieutenant Hatch to Brunner. Captain Lloyd, Linwood, and Lieutenant Barsby, Brunner, will arrive at Geraldine on Thursday to fill the vacancies. PERSONAL Miss Eileen King, Geradine, has received word of her appointment to the staff of the West School. Timaru. Miss U. Barwood, Fairlie, has returned home after spending a holiday with Mrs A. Borrell, Geraldine. Mr and Mrs E. P. S. Bennett have returned from a holiday spent at Nelson. Miss Grace Cartwright, Levels, is Che guest of Mr and Mrs C. S. Davies, Raukapuka. Miss E. G. McCullough, Geraldine, has received word of her appointment to the staff of the Geraldine District High School. Mr L. Brown, Woodbury, has been appointed to the staff of an Auckland school. Mr L. Borrell, Goose Bay. wno has been visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs A. starred with Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers. “Stage Door” will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night at 8.15. Miss Hopburn and Miss Rogers are seen as two stage-struck girls who, with a group of other ambitious youngsters, live in a theatrical boarding house in New York, where most of the action of the powerful drama transpires. A notable supporting cast is headed by Gail Patrick. Other players are Constant Collier, Andrea Leeds, Samuel B Hinds and Lucille Ball.

Under the auspices of the St. Patrick’s Dance Committee a New Year Ball will be held in the Geraldine Town Hall next Tuesday, at 8.30 p.m. The Pleasant Valley Tennis Club is holding a dance in the Pleasant Valley Hall on January 21.
