WAR IN SPAIN
LOSSES IN CIVIL WAR HEAVY TOLL IN MILITARY AND CIVIL LIFE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Independent Cable Service ’ (Received December 10, 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, December 9. It is conservatively estimated that over 1,250,000 Spanish soldiers and civilians, on both sides, including those executed, died in the 873 days of the civil war, according to Spanish sources, which point out that exactness is impossible, as neither side has published casualty lists. Foreign casualties are not calculable, but the Italian losses in the rebel ranks are given as 4508 killed and 12,715 wounded; 400 members of the British International Brigade were killed, and 1230 wounded; 1117 civilians were killed and 3747 wounded. In air raids and bombardments of Madrid, from October, 1936 to October 1938, 10,000 children in Government territory were killed and 15,000 wounded; and between 1936 and 1938, 5000 civilians were killed and 10,000 wounded in Government Spain. The rebels damaged or captured 266 British ships, killed 47 seamen on the high seas and in ports during the war. SHOTS BY REBEL WARSHIPS DISREGARDED BY FRENCH STEAMERS United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright PARIS, December 8. The steamer Grand Queviily, despite a shot being fired across her bows, did not heed the order by a Rebel warship to stop. The French destroyer Basque, which was recently detailed for patrol duties in the Straits of Gibraltar, came at full speed to the assistance of the Grand Queviily which was then able to proceed on her way.
