TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB On Saturday afternoon the Timaru Defence Rifle Club fired the first match of the service championship. Shortly after commencing light rain set in and a cold southerly made conditions difficult. Further heavy rain caused the abandonment of the 500 yards shoot, and this range will be fired at a later date The conditions were: At 200 yards, five shots application, 10 shots rapid in 45 seconds, five shots snap, target exposed three seconds; at 100 yards, five shots grouping; at 500 yards, five shots application. F. J. Black secured the only possible at the first practice and in the rapid L. G. Smith’s board read— 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 4 3—47. In the snap and grouping sr en men secured the possible. At present L. G. Smith with 110 is leading W. T. Taylor by one point and the winner will be found on the completion of the 500 yards shoot. The following are the leading ten in the championship and McGlashan Aggregate: Black 289, Taylor 283, Paine 284. Murray 280, Brehaut 279. E. Healy 278, M. Healy 275. Johnson 272, Malcolm 272, J. M. Smith 270. In the Bull’s-Eye competition Black and Taylor are equal with 45, Paine 41. Brehaut 40. W. T. Taylor leads in the Parker Cup with 80, Black and Paine 79. Murray and E. Healy 78, M.
