Dec. 31—Winton T.C. S. Wilson will ride Arctic King in the Auckland Cup. Fine Art's next race will probably be lin the Auckland Trotting Cup. Of! the I limit the Methven pacer will be exi tremely hard to beat. Erination, who has been carrying 13st. and over in recent hurdle events, is to be prepared for the Auckland Cup in which he has been awarded 7.0. Floodtide has been scratched for the Auckland Cup. He broke down in Melbourne, and is unlikely to race this season. First race at New Brighton at 12.30. Logan Derby will be shipped from Bluff for Tasmania on Monday. He will probably give an exhibition this afternoon at the Wairio non-totalisator meeting. The Gisborne owner-trainer A. McIntosh, who was successful with Blonde Princess at Ellerslie on Monday, states that Sly Fox has taken no harm from his racing at the New Zealand Cup Meeting, and would be on hand to contest the Auckland Cup at Christmas. At the Perth meeting on November 14, Cloudy Range won the Victoria Handicap, of 13 furlongs, his mile rate being 2.14*. On the same day, Royal Doulton won the South Australian Handicap of 13 furlongs at a mile rate of 2.153.

The Buzzer, winner of last year’s Ahckland Cup, has been raised from 7.6 to 8.11, although he has not won in the interval. Knight of Australia, second last year with 7.5, is in this time with 7.6.

Bexley Girl’s Addington form makes the Takanini-trained mare look something akin to a certainty for the main event at the Waikato meeting to-day, and as Sandusky will be bracketed with her the Smith combination should be backed down to a short price.

After the attractive performance of High Caste in winning the Cambria Handicap on the first day of the Auckland meeting, the colt’s owner. Mr A. J. Govern, was approached to put a price on him, but the reply was that the horse was not for sale.

The hurdle jockey N. C. Trillo broke a collarbone when Erebus fell with him in the hurdles on the first day at Feilding. Trillo had been prevailed on to ride L. G. Morris’ hurdlers after announcing his retirement, and his accident may hasten his decision in curtailing racing activities.

Australian clubs now claim as their own a set of colours which are worn in races when it is considered that conflicting jackets may cause confusion. Most of the Melbourne clubs use all white, and the A.J.C. has retained all pink.

L. G. Morris says Disdain has settled down well in her new. home at Awapuni. No definite plans have been made for her next racing, but she cannot complain of her 7.4 in the Auckland Railway Handicap and will be nearly favourite if she starts.

One of the most striking contrasts of the racing weekend was the substantial increase in turnover in Feilding and the decrease in Auckland. Some people think that this spring there has been more racing than is required in the north; others claim that Auckland’s slump was due to single pool betting.

G. R. Tattersail, who recently completed his apprenticeship with the Awapuni trainer G. W. New, rode three winners on the opening day at Feilding. His anxiety to get Sporting Gift away to a good start on the second day resulted on his being stood down for two weeks, and he will now miss the Otaki and Woodville meetings.

Stretto, winner of the Railway Handicap last Boxing Day with 7.4, is up to 9.7 in the race this year. Taking a line through Malagigi who should be equitably treated compared with other Auckland horses, one of the visiting contingent should win the Auckland Cup. Malagigi with 7.10 has no appeal on Riccarton form. Provided the track is firm at New Brighton to-day, Lawn Derby should have no difficulty in collecting the purse of £lOO offered for a mile in 2.4, which is required to break Happy Voyage’s record. On this course Harold Logan stepped a mile and a quarter in 2.36 3-5, only 1-5 outside his best time at Addington; Onyx established her 3.13 there; and at one time Admiral Wood put up a New Zealand record for two miles at the seaside.

It is reckoned that considerable improvement can be wo r ked in the condition of the Bulandshar colt High

Caste, and by the time the Foal Stakes is run on Boxing Day he will be a much better horse. He began brilliantly at Ellerslie, and had little difficulty in wearing down Orelio, who had been confidently supported. High Caste is much bigger than his half-sister, Stretto, and he possesses more quality than his half-brother Mazir, so something good may be expected of him. A change in the attitude of the Federal P.O. towards illegal betting is foreshadowed, in an assurance given by the P.M.G. to the Premier of South Australia, that the Department will take a firm stand to assist States in the operation of their laws against S.P. merchants. Formerly, the P.O. placed obstacles in the way of State authorities, and aided and abetted the lawbreakers by giving them special telegraphic and telephonic facilities. It will be interesting to see if it changes its attitude also in the question of pirate broadcasting. The following are likely to be in request at New Brighton to-day: Trial Handicap— lndian Scout, Bon Chance, Lady Ede. Improvers' Handicap— Quest, Sentiment, Cruiser. Mace Memorial— King's Play, Ironside, Gallant Knight. Wainoni Handicap Waikari Jack, Mazaire, Gay Lady. Bowhill Handicap Fremont, Dark Hazard, Nell Grattan. Saltaire Handicap— Blue Logan, Gyrate, Guy Hugo. New Brighton Handicap Southern Chief, Twenty Grand, Treasure Bond. Electric Handicap Heather Queen, Waipahi, Reno. King Carol of Rumania has purchased Flrdaussi and several well-bred brood mares from the Aga Khan. This recalls the memorable St. Leger of 1932 in which the Aga Khan was not only first and second with Firdaussi and Dastur, but fourth and fifth with Udaipur and Taj Kasra respectively. The dispbsal of Firdaussi still leaves the Aga Khan as the owner of more stud horses than any other breeder. Two years ago he sold Blenheim to go to America for £45,000. At various studs in England he has Bahram at a fee of 500 guineas, Mahmoud at 300 guineas, Dastur, Felicitation, and Umidwar each at £l9B, and a newcomer, Khan Bahadur, at £4B. At the French stud Mirza II has lately been sent to join Taj Akbar and Sind, the fee for each of these being about £lOO. The Aga Khan's Blenheim horse Le Grand Due, who stood in Belgium last season, has been sent to France.
