SWIMMING
WEST END CLUB its opening when a large muster of swimmers and supporters attended. Mr J. Dennison, vice-president, at the opening referred to the heavy season ahead. An inter-club carnival is to be held on December 17 when members of the Kiwi Club, Dunedin, will attend. Members will also compete at Oamaru and Dunedin carnivals. Mr Dennison congratulated the club on its institution of free tuition of swimming, life saving and water polo and hoped that good weather would be experienced during the season. Results of races were: Intermediate 33 1-3 Yards Handicap: First heat: R. Moore 1, J. Shanahan 2. F. Rendall 3. Second heat: Miss N. Manning 1, M. Shanahan 2, F. Conlon 3. Final: R. Moore 1, J. Shanahan 2, M. Shanahan 3. Time—22 4-ssec. Men's 50 Yards Open Handicap: D. J. Shanahan 1, L. Campbell 2, D. Andrews 3. Time—32sec. Open Breaststroke Handicap, 33 1-3 Yards: D. J. Shanahan 1, M. Shanahan 2, J. Shanahan 3. Time—34 4-ssec. Open Dive: L. Andrews 1, M. Shanahan 2, J. Drummond 3.
