New Military Attire Good progress has been made by the contractors with the new full-dress blue uniform for the Territorial Army, and it is expected that the first supply will be ready by the middle of this month. Sample sizes for fitting have already been issued to the four centres and units are now submitting their indents for clothing the rank and file. When the first supply comes to hand an immediate start will be made to issue them before the Christmas vacation. Letter in Esperanto The value of a universal language was demonstrated recently when a member of the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association received a communication, in Esperanto, from a Finnish adult educational institution. He was able to translate the message, which indicated that the teaching of languages was an important factor in adult education and that in addition the organisation the writer was associated with believed in the system of organising excursions to various countries contiguous with Finland, with the idea of enlarging the outlook of members. Public Works Tour A trip that will include a visit to the hydro-electric development works at Waikaremoana and to the scene of the oil-boring operations in the Gisborne district, will be undertaken by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple), who will leave Wellington for Auckland to-morrow. The Minister, who will be accompanied by the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr John Wood), is also to inspect the East Coast railway line and the flood restoration work in Hawke’s Bay, and will be away from Wellington for a week. Other Public Works operations on the itinerary that has been arranged will be visited en route. Successful Community Sing A large audience enjoyed the community sing to raise funds for the purchase of furnishings for the Timaru Women’s Labour Club-room, in the Theatre Royal last night, when Mr Jack Maybury, the popular “Jacko” of Station 3ZB and Messrs Eddie Hogan (humour) and Norman Carson (pianist), of Christchurch, provided plenty of amusement. Mr Maybury conducted the sing, and he was ably assisted by his colleagues in keeping the fun at full swing. The audience entered into the spirit of the occasion, and old-time and new favourites were sung with enthusiasm. A wide variety of goods and produce were also disposed of at auction at good prices. The assisting artists, who each received well-merited applause, were as follow:—Tap dance, Iris Hoare; bagpipe selections, Miss Molly Doyle; vocal duet, Mr C. Griffiths and Miss Griffiths; Miss Flora Gordon’s senior pupils irf a "Silver Lining” ballet and an Indian ballet (accompanist, Mrs G. Campbell) and Messrs Denley Bros, in cowboy songs with guitar accompaniment. At the conclusion of the programme Mrs W. Doyle, president of the Timaru Women's Labour Club, expressed the thanks of her committee to Mr Maybury and his colleagues, the performers, the donors of goods and produce and to the audience for their support.
