ROYAL VISIT

INTEREST IN THE UNITED STATES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received November 9. 6.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 8. The Washington correspondent of “The New York Times” says: “The State Department has emphasised the personal nature of their Majesties’ visit to President Roosevelt, and declined to indicate the ceremonial attendant to the visit, but it assumed that President Roosevelt or his personal representative, as well as other Government officials of high rank, will meet the Royal guests at the railway station. There will probably be a State dinner at White House. During the two or three days stay of their Majesties, the King will place a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and Washington’s Tomb at Mount Vernon, and If Congress is in session he will be received there. It would be an occasion for surprise If Mr Chamberlain accompanied the King and Queen for that might imply official discussions, and such implication might arouse among the Isolationists in Congress suspicion that grave decisions were under consideration, Involving the United States in committments abroad. Views here differ regarding the implications from the Royal visit. Some believe it will strengthen the ties between the two democracies, while others, like Senator Borah, declare they did not believe this, since Great Britain was now co-operating with the totalitarianists. Congressman Dies, in a statement, said: “They will get a very cordial reception from the American people, who feel closer to Britain than to come European countries, with different ideologies.” PREPARATIONS IN CANADA MOTIVE OF VISIT DISCUSSED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received November 9, 11.15 p.m.) OTTAWA, November 8. Mr W. L. Mackenzie King (Prime Minister) announced that social functions would be reduced to a minimum during their Majesties’ visit to Canada, in order that they may be able to see as much as possible of the Dominion. All nine provinces will be visited. The Prime Minister refused to confirm a report that the King will preside at a meeting of the Canadian Privy Council, but said that it would be a very nice touch. Mr Mackenzie King also declined to comment on the London statement that their Majesties’ visit was due partly to the concern regarding Canada’s loyalty to the Empire. The Opposition Leader (Mr Manion) in a statement said: “Canadians, while desiring to remain friends with the great Republic southward, are firm in their intention to remain within the British Empire.”
