As a practical demonstration of the trout available to anglers in and round the Tongariro river, Tokannu, at the opening of the fishing season In the Rotorua acclimatisation district, a northern fisherman sent the Minister for Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, 12 fish he had caught on the fly. “I have not yet had reports from officers of the department showing all round how the season opened,” said the Minister, “but if the specimen trout sent to me are any criterion of the fish anglers may expect to land then there should be no complaints about the Rotorua fisheries."

Since the abolition of the proficiency examination, teachers in primary schools had been able to use their own initiative instead of having to drive the children in the same fold, said the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, addressing parents of pupils of the Roseneath School, Wellington, wheie a “parents’ day” was held. It was to the credit of the teachers of the Dominion that they had taken full advantage of the opportunity of developing the culti ral side of education with which they had been presented. If the Senate of the University would help

with the abolition of the matriculation examination, teachers in secondary schools would have a similar opportunity. Every child could do something well, and the great art of the teacher of to-day was to find at what a child was best. Children gained self-respect by being developed along those lines. He was very pleased to have had the opportunity of seeing the work being done at the Rosenea+h School, and congratulated the staff and children. He was particularly glad to see that the rudiments of the arts and drama i ere being taught “There ought to be a statutory rule that witnesses be out of Court during the hearing of cases in which they are appearing,” said Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Otahuhu Magistrate’s Court, during the hearing of a case in which a motorist was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car. The Magistrate said such a provision was essential in the interests of justice. Witnesses ought not only to be out of Court; but should be required to remain well beyond the hearing of the cases in which they were interested. “With witnesses in Court, it is difficult for the Bench to distinguish whether their evidence is coloured by what witnesses have heard of the proceedings,” he said. The suggestion that he advanced was fair to both sides. Witnesses were not allowed in the Supreme Court during the hearing of cases concerning them, and a similar provision should obtain in the loafer Court.

“What is this New Zealand Defence League?” asked a member of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association last evening when discussing a circular from the league. “I don’t think we should be Interested in it,” said Mr J. S. Chisholm. “It seems to be an overlapping sort of business. Have the four colonels got anything to do with it?”
