BOY POACHERS
REPEATING RIFLE CONFISCATED Ten boys, eight aged 13 years and two aged 12 years, were recently caught poaching in the Te Moana river, reported Mr F. W. Pellett, curator-ranger, to the Council of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last night. Mr Pellett mentioned that some of the boys had snares, some had gaffs and others used their hands. One boy was in possession of a .22 repeater rifle, which was fully loaded in the breach and magazine. The boys had six trout in their possession. The ranger remarked that it was not suggested that the rifle was being used on the fish, but it was no doubt dangerous in the hands of boys of such tender years. The rifle and cartridges had been handed to the police. Mr Pellett suggested that the Child Welfare Officer (Mr W. Cumming) should see the parents of the boys and the Council agreed to this course.
