The Chinese claim the recapture of Samshui. near Canton, where 250,000 Kwangsi troops surrounded the city under Marshal Chiang Kai-Shek’s personal direction. The Japanese are retired to Fushang. The Chinese also repulsed a Japanese attack at Nanlingchiao, but elsewhere the Japanese are steadily advancing. It is reported from Tokio that the Japanese have captured the key point of Tusnyang. A Shanghai message states that three Seaforth Highlanders and three Royal Marines from H.MS. Birmingham were injured in the explosion of a bomb in a beer hall. A Canton message states that the Japanese, in spite of British and American requests to do so, have refused to feed 13,000 Chinese refugees. Troops and naval units begun an advance by three routes against Shangsha, Marshal Chiang Kai-Shek's headquarters. The naval units reached Kaiyu, half way between Hankow and Yochow. The troops occupied Puchi, Tsunghang, Kwashan and Llukia are now battering Fenshullng. Official friendly Franco-Japanese negotiations are proceeding over the transport of arms across Indo-China which Japan hopes will be stopped shortly. There is no sign of the necessity of Japan to take counter action.
